One of the most effective diets is the Mayo Clinic Diet. It is not expected that you deprive yourself of all your favorite foods but learn to restrict your portions. The Mayo Clinic Diet teaches you how to choose healthy foods, ignore unhealthy foods (fried foods, foods with added sugar), and as a result, develop good eating habits. The end result is for you to maintain a healthy weight. At the same time, you need to include daily exercise so that it also becomes a habit.
The basis for the Mayo Clinic Diet is the “Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid”. The pyramid illustrates the importance of balance between exercise and eating healthy foods. You should concentrate on eating whole grain products (bread, muffins, pasta), protein vegetables (beans), skinless chicken, fish, dairy products that are fat-reduced (milk, cheeses, yoghurt), and margarines made from unsaturated fats.
There are two phases to the Mayo Clinic Diet:
1. Two weeks: learn 5 healthy habits, break 5 unhealthy habits, add 5 new habits. Included is 30 minutes of physical activity every day. It does not have to be the same activity – walk one day, bike one day, swim one day etc. It is essential that you do the activity faithfully for 30 minutes each day.
2. During the next two weeks, you learn how to set weight-loss goals, how to make healthy choices, and learn meal planning. Regular daily exercise is to be part of your new plan for healthy living.
